At Aussie Hybrid Solar, we’re committed to delivering smarter, more sustainable energy solutions for Australian homes and businesses. We’re proud to be part of an industry collaboration with UNSW Canberra, VOLTVAL and leading technology partners to help advance AI-powered solar and battery systems for strata and multi-unit residential buildings.
The project centres around the Modular Power Portal System (MPPS), an innovative shared energy platform developed by our team to make rooftop solar and battery storage more practical, efficient and accessible for apartment complexes, strata communities and other multi-occupancy buildings.
Supported by a $1.2 million Australian Government Trailblazer Recycling & Clean Energy grant, researchers from UNSW Canberra are working alongside industry partners to integrate advanced artificial intelligence into the MPPS. The AI technology will help forecast solar generation, predict electricity demand and optimise energy distribution across multiple properties in real time.
Helping More Australians Access Solar Energy
Australia has one of the highest rates of rooftop solar adoption in the world. However, many Australians living in strata buildings, apartments and other multi-unit developments still face significant barriers to accessing affordable renewable energy.
Unlike standalone homes, these properties often involve shared roof space, multiple electricity meters, complex ownership arrangements and ageing electrical infrastructure. These challenges can make traditional solar installations difficult and costly to implement.
The MPPS has been developed to overcome these challenges by enabling rooftop solar and battery storage to be shared more efficiently across multiple residents, helping more Australians benefit from clean, renewable energy.
Smarter Energy Management Through Artificial Intelligence
The MPPS connects rooftop solar systems, battery storage and electricity users into one intelligent energy platform.
Working with researchers at UNSW Canberra, the AI-powered system is being developed to:
- Forecast solar generation and electricity demand
- Optimise battery charging and discharging
- Coordinate shared energy resources across multiple residents and properties
- Balance electricity usage in real time
- Increase renewable energy consumption
- Help reduce operating costs for property owners, strata managers and residents
According to the UNSW research team, the technology has the potential to increase renewable energy utilisation while reducing operating costs for participating buildings by up to 30%.
Real-World Trials Across Sydney
To validate the technology, the project will be tested across multiple residential and commercial sites throughout Sydney.
These pilot sites will provide valuable real-world performance data, helping demonstrate how shared solar and battery systems can successfully operate in complex property environments, including apartment buildings, strata communities and mixed-use developments.
The findings will support future deployment of the technology across a broader range of buildings throughout Australia.
Driving the Future of Shared Renewable Energy
Innovation has always been an important part of Aussie Hybrid Solar’s approach to renewable energy.
By contributing to the development of the MPPS alongside leading researchers and industry partners, we’re helping create practical solutions that make renewable energy more accessible for communities that have traditionally faced barriers to adopting rooftop solar.
This project represents an important step towards smarter energy management, lower electricity costs and a more sustainable future for Australia’s growing number of multi-unit residential buildings.
